On April 18, 1919 a group of engineers who were alumni of Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur started The Association of Engineers to make a forum aiming at raising voice to bring parity to the discrimination meted out to Indian engineers as against the British engineers.

The main objectives laid in The Constitution of The Association are

The Association of Engineers was registered under the West Bengal Society Registration Act in the year 1961 (Registration No. S/4849 of 1923-1924). The name was later augmented as The Association of Engineers, India in the year 1973.
